Lesbians in entertainment television. It's not even half an hour into the show and I'm already a bit upset/confused. Why do the have her all dolled up? I mean, this isn't the rosie that we know? Or is it, and I've just been hiding.
In any case, gay and lesbians are becoming more widely shown on tv, though not identified as one. Other than Ellen - and now Rosie (again) - everyone else just plays a lesbian on tv but not they are not really lesbian identified "artists/stars" that are seen as "successful" or are they?
There are actresses on tv who are lesbian who just play their characters and thats fine. Then, there are other actress that play lesbians - not understanding the culture more than what it has been "glamorized" sometimes. They say that lesbians and gays are becoming more accepted on tv - but is it for who we really are or for what the media believes that we should look like.
Is the reason that the media dressed ROSIE is because the world accepts "femme" lesbians more than they accept "butch" lesbians? Or they were like "ok, we know you're gay - but no one wants to see a dyke on prime time tv, so can you be a little more femme to be easier on the eyes?". Not to say that ROSIE wasn't pretty, but why couldn't they just let her dress without the sparkle? And why aren't there more shows on prime time tv about "lesbian" lifestyle? Why is L-Word the only alternative we have?
And to be honest, even that is a little glamourized as well.
Are gay and lesbian being more accepted on tv? Or is the media molding a version of what they will accept? Is what we see on tv and accurate portrayal.
